MINNESOTANS: SPECIAL ELECTION ALERT

With the resignations of Representative Tony Cornish (MN House District 32B) and Senator Dan Schoen (MN Senate District 54) each will be replaced via special elections before the legislative session starts on Feb 20th. You don't have to live in these districts to help (but if you do, be sure to track what's happening and go vote!).

This means that over the next two months, in the midst of the holidays, there will be both primaries and special elections to replace these candidates. It's expected that a LOT of money is going to flow in the race for Schoen's seat because the GOP majority in the Senate is so slim. Having one more vote on their side would allow them to push through a lot more legislation without compromising with the DFL.They want that seat.

Voter turnout will be key in keeping Schoen's seat and flipping Cornish's. Special elections have notoriously low turnout. Most people don't even know they are happening. The side with the better Get Out the Vote results will win these seats.

WHAT TO DO:

1. For the Senate seat, please consider signing up for volunteer for Get Out the Vote efforts or donate here: https://www.dfl.org/sd54/ Sign up for information and feel free to email the DFL contact with any questions.

2. For the House seat, ditto with the above. Blue Earth is the biggest county in the district and this is their DFL contact info: https://www.dfl.org/blueearth/

3. Spread the word about these elections, and recruit friends to help knock doors, make calls, and get out the vote. Re-posting this blog entry to your social network is a good way to start.

Special elections are low-turnout, so every vote counts! We can keep the Senate seat, and let's flip that House seat while we're at it!

When Al Franken vacated his Senate seat earlier this year, Tina Smith moved from Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota to serve as the state's junior U.S. Senator as appointed by Governor Dayton. She's running to keep the seat this November, first in a primary (you can vote early starting Friday, June 29th) and then (preferably) in the general. She deserves our support in both races.
