NATIONAL ACTION ITEM: CAGE THE KRAKEN! TELL CONGRESS TO REIN IN TRUMP

Please re-post this entry!

Donald Trump has abandoned the responsibilities of the Presidency. Helped into power by the meddling of one foreign government, he now risks the lives of millions with reckless rhetoric toward another. Republican leaders from Ted Cruz to Chuck Grassley, Marco Rubio, Orrin Hatch, and Paul Ryan unequivocally condemned Heather Heyer's murder during last weekend's white supremacist gathering in Charlottesville as an act of domestic terrorism. Donald Trump, on the other hand, has hemmed and hawed-- clealry reluctant to alienate the white nationalists who support him.

The only sphere where 45 shows any enthusiasm is in firing Robert Mueller, which Congress has the power to stop. If he insists on ceding the responsibilities of office, it's time to limit the President's power as well. Public pressure can encourage Congress to take action in the vacuum left by the President's indolence.

SCRIPT, if you need it (if you know your rep already supports what you're asking for, adapt your script as a thank you— yes, this is important to do too!):

"Hello. My name is _______. My zip code is _____. I don't need a personal response. I'm calling with three requests. First: I encourage Senator ________ to  support S.200, a measure that would prohibit the President from conducting a nuclear first strike without a Congressional declaration of war expressly authorizing such a strike. Second: I request that the Senator support either the the Special Counsel Independence Protection Act-- which would allow a special counsel to be fired only if a federal court first confirms relevant misconduct, or the Special Counsel Integrity Act-- which would allow Robert Mueller or any special counsel to challenge their firing in court. Three: I ask that the Senator encourage the Justice Department to prosecute the murder of Heather Heyer during the white supremacist march in Charlottesville on August 12th as a terrorism case. If you could pass my concerns along, I'd appreciate it."  Be sure to thank the staffer for their time. And let your social network know you made the call!
