6/5/17: OPPOSE THE REGULATORY ACCOUNTABILITY ACT AND THE FINANCIAL CHOICE ACT

Please re-post this entry!

Thanks to the good people at Indivisible for today's action items.

SENATE ACTION: OPPOSE THE REGULATORY ACCOUNTABILITY ACT OF 2017 (RAA)

The Regulatory Accountability Act of 2017 (RAA) is an extremely dangerous bill that the Senate will soon vote on. The RAA will impact nearly every American under the guise of a “harmless” procedural change. More info here. The bill changes long-standing rules on how federal agencies regulate everything from food safety to toxic chemicals to equipment failure at nuclear power plants—things that keep us all safe. Republicans are quietly ramming this bill through Congress. We have to act quickly to stop them.

WHAT TO DO: Call your U.S. Senator.

Senator Amy Klobuchar: (202) 224-3244 / 612-727-5220

SCRIPT, if you need it (if you know your rep already supports what you're asking for, adapt your script as a thank you— yes, this is important to do too!):

"Hello. My name is _______. My zip code is _____. I don't need a personal response. I'm calling to encourage Senator ________ to oppose the The Regulatory Accountability Act of 2017. This legislation will undermine the processes of independent agencies working on our health and safety, and I urge the Senator to vote against it. If you could pass my concerns along, I'd appreciate it." If you have a personal story relating to any of the above bills, it's of great value for the Senator to share during debate if you'd care to include it. Feel free to throw in a request to oppose Obamacare repeal while you're at it. Be sure to thank the staffer for their time. And let your social network know you made the call!

HOUSE ACTION: OPPOSE THE FINANCIAL CHOICE ACT (H.R. 10)
The so-called "Financial Choice Act" is scheduled for a June 7 vote in the House of Representatives. Supposedly focused on financial reform and Wall Street accountability, in reality it eliminates major consumer safeguards created in the wake of the disastrous financial crisis of 2008. More info here. The bill would weaken regulatory powers that pre-date the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act, and eliminate long-standing rights of shareholders to hold companies accountable for corporate misbehavior.

WHAT TO DO: Call your U.S. Representative.
